IJahman Levi grew up in Trenchtown, a district of Kingston, and was passionate about music from an early age. His first influences are Alton Ellis and Joe Higgs. He then meets Bob Marley who, like him, was beginning to sing in the streets of Kingston. Shortly after, he recorded his first single Red Eyes People for Duke Reid and Treasure Isle under the name Youth.
In 1975, Ijahman recorded Jah Heavy Load for the Concrete Jungle label. His meeting in 1976 with Chris Blackwell, owner of Island, during his collaboration with trombonist Rico Rodriguez, for the album Man From Wareika, released on the Island label, will be decisive for the rest of his career. Indeed, the British producer spotted him and offered to produce it, after having definitively confirmed his judgment in listening to Jah Heavy Load. Ijahman co-produced with Geoffrey Chung nine tracks that Island would release in 1978 under the name Haile I Hymn then a second, Are we a Warrior, in 1979. These two albums put IJahman in the firmament of Reggae Roots.
Like many other Jamaican artists of the same musical generation, such as Bob Marley, Burning Spear, U Roy, Joseph Hill of the Culture group, Albert Griffiths of the Gladiators ... Ijahman has always known how to remain master of his work which counts today 36 albums, without ever deviating from its first sensibility Strictly Roots and Culture. Residing in Jamaica, he continues to perform on stages around the world.

Il rencontre alors Bob Marley qui, comme lui, commençait à chanter dans les rues de Kingston. En effet, le producteur Britannique le repère et lui propose de le produire, ce après avoir définitivement confirmé son jugement à l’écoute de Jah Heavy Load. Comme l’ont fait de nombreux autres artistes Jamaïcains de la même génération musicale, tels Bob Marley, Burning Spear, U Roy, Joseph Hill du groupe Culture, Albert Griffiths des Gladiators ...Ijahman a toujours su rester maître de son œuvre qui comptabilise aujourd’hui 36 albums, sans jamais dévier de sa sensibilité première Strictly Roots and Culture. Résidant en Jamaïque, il continue de se produire sur les scènes du monde entier.
